American Goldfinch, have been popular cage birds for centuries because of their bright colors and cheery songs. This idea is best explained by the 13th century mystic poet, Rumi:

• because their songs give pleasure.

Unfortunately, human history also continues to be full of examples of "captivity", not only for beauty, but for labor, for money, for ideas...

Would you rather be beautiful but enslaved, or, ugly but free? This question takes a new meaning if enslavement takes place in our own minds. And a whole different meaning, if we are not even conscious of it...
