The Amish, who experienced religious persecution in Europe, first began arriving in America around 1730 with an invitation from William Penn who was trying to establish a colony of religious freedom and tolerance that was open to all people of virtue. Penn called his endeavor "Holy Experiment". The Amish initially settled around Lancaster County, Pennsylvania where a sizable community still exists today.
