Hierapolis / Ploutonion: Gates of Hell

Hierapolis - Ploutonion: Gates of Hell

Hierapolis was an ancient Greco-Roman city located in Ancient Phrygia, now Pamukkale. Built over hot springs in the 3rd century BCE, the location has been used as a spa since the 2nd century BCE.

Recently a Ploutonion, a portal to the underworld was discovered at the location. Ancient historian Strabo described the gate as: "Any animal that passes inside meets instant death. I threw in sparrows and they immediately breathed their last and fell".
