Nesting Oystercatcher

Nesting Oystercatcher

The American Oystercatcher is a large shorebird with a distinct thick orange beak. As its name suggests, it it specializes in feeding on oysters, clams, and mussels. Oystercatchers are listed as a species of concern in several coastal states due to low and declining populations, and threats to coastal habitats and restricted nesting habitats. In the 19th century they had became locally extinct in Northeastern United States due to market hunting and egg collecting.

Photographed at the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.
