Kirsehir Cacabey Observatory, Medrese and Mosque

Medrese is a general term of Semitic origin (Madrasa, Midrash) which means "educational institution". In the old Islamic world, the medrese was the equivalent of a modern university. The Cacabey Astronomy Medrese located in the Central Anatolian city of Kirsehir was built by the governor Nureddin Cacabey in 1272-1273 A.D. The Cacabey Medrese features an openable dome and numerous mathematical patterns and engravings. The columns you see on either side of the main arch are thought to represent known planets with the larger globe representing the sun. This magnificent building was converted to a mosque in the early 20th century.
